Published on behalf of the Churchwardens of St Leonard’s:
A statement from The Bishop of Salisbury, The Rt Revd Stephen Lake on the death of Her Majesty The Queen.
It is with the most profound sadness that we mourn the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Almost all of us alive today have known only this great monarch as our Queen. Her life of service, of constancy and faithfulness, underpinned by her own very personal faith, has been an inspiration to people across the world. Seventy years ago, The Queen asked us to pray that God would grant her wisdom and strength: these prayers that were answered in abundance.
Now we continue to pray: for her family and all who grieve, and for all of us as we come to terms with the loss of our Queen. On behalf of all our worshipping communities and schools in the diocese as we commend Her Majesty in prayer into the loving arms of Jesus Christ her Saviour.
May she rest in peace and rise in glory.
Arrangements for St Leonard’s and St James Trowbridge for the next few days:
Friday 9th September
A Book of Condolences is available for signing in St Leonard’s Church during normal Church opening hours (roughly 10:00 until 16:00). The book will be available until the day after the funeral. Copies of a sheet of prayers for The Queen and new King are also available for people to use within the Church or take away.
Floral tributes may be placed on the grass area to the left of the Church porch.
Church bells were rung half muffled at noon, as they were across the country.
Saturday 10th September
Church bells will be rung open in the afternoon, in celebration, following the Proclamation of the new Monarch in London. Bells will then be muffled again until the day of the state funeral.
Sunday 11th September
Preparations are underway for an appropriate short live-streamed service from St James in Trowbridge at 10:45 on Sunday morning. You can view livestreamed services on the St James’ Youtube channel here.
The licensing of our new Rector Jake Eggertsen by the Bishop of Salisbury will go ahead as planned at 15:00 on the 11th of September in St James’ Trowbridge. Please do join us for this service.
Further updates will be issued as plans are finalised.
