History Centre Summer Events

The Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre have a really great programme of events coming up this summer:

Churchwardens’ Accounts – Tuesday 17 July 10.30am
Explore this wonderful source for local and family history, which includes details of goods and services bought by the church, (giving names of local officials and suppliers), and the names of people who received help (such as poor relief) from the church, as well as gruesome details of the killing of species regarded as vermin, such as sparrows and polecats – and much more! Illustrated talk by archivist Robert Jago

A Review of Archaeology in Chippenham – Wednesday 25 July 7pm
Mike Stone has spent 40 years in archaeology, heritage and museums, and has been a visiting lecturer for the Universities of Bath, Bournemouth, and Bristol. Mike is a former Curator of Chippenham Museum and Heritage Centre and author of over half a dozen books on local history. He is therefore very well placed to bring us this fascinating illustrated talk about the latest archaeological findings in Chippenham.

Good Impressions: Document Seals from the 13th-20th Centuries – Thursday 9 August 10.30am
Seals have been used for centuries to prove the validity of important documents such as title deeds and charters, but in addition to their practical purpose they have a unique beauty and often are full of humour in their designs, with puns and plays on words galore! An illustrated talk by archivist Steve Hobbs

History Revealed Day: Tisbury – Thursday 6 September 10am
