Work starts on School Wall this Friday…

Headteacher Lindsey Hermon has just been informed that work on re-building the school wall on Main Street will be starting this Friday. The news was unexpectedly last minute, and Lindsey apologises that she hasn’t been able to give villagers more notice, but is very hopeful that it won’t cause disruption for anyone.

The expectation is that they will demolish the existing wall first, then build what will become the inner part of the new wall in concrete block, with the final stage re-building the outer stone wall.

We’ll bring you more news as is comes, but you can find a more detailed overview of the project on pages 18 & 19 of the February 2023 edition of the Parish News…

  1. Hi Sarah

I deeply regret this rebuilding of the school wall which has been a feature of the village for around 100 years. While I understand the reasons, they are to my mind, an overreaction to the potential threat to children. If we want to live in an open society then there are risks and if we wish to carry on with are our daily routines we have to accept them. We cannot and should not shield everyone from all of these risks. Given the number of people who are injured or killed in road accidents should we ban the use of private cars ? Will we see in future private guards, search lights and barbed wire surrounding any facilities where children play?

I will be interested to see if this rebuild extends along the boundary between the school playground and Church Farm given that there is an open driveway into the adjoining property. If not then the rebuild of the wall along the road side will be a complete waste of time from a security point of view.

    Gerry
