September events at the History Centre

Wednesday 6th September 10:30-4:30

History Revealed – Bremhill – with Julie Davis, Ally McConnell and Dorothy Treasure
At Calne Library
for the morning session. Own transport is required for the field trip in the afternoon.
Discover how to research the origins of local villages with a look at fascinating Bremhill.
Focus on archaeology, archival documents, maps and additional resources for local history research.
Includes an afternoon field trip to put newfound skills to the test with Wiltshire Buildings expert Dorothy Treasure.

A Beginner’s Guide to Researching Family History – a talk by Ally McConnell
At Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre

If you’re new to family history research, or want to see what else is out there, join archivist Ally McConnell for a look at what the History Centre has to offer and how best to do family history research. This talk will conclude with a tour of the searchroom so you can get a feel of what is where.

All You Ever Wanted To Know About Parish Registers – with Robert Jago
At Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre

A detailed examination of the changing format of parish registers, 1538-1837, and the information they contain. This is a rare opportunity to work with original registers, some dating back to Tudor times. A workshop not to be missed!

Conservation Roadshow
At County Hall, Trowbridge

Come and talk to our expert conservators to find out how to look after your precious family keepsakes, photographs and treasures.
Get advice on the best materials and techniques to care for your items at home and when to seek help from an expert.
If you have items in need of a little TLC see if our conservators can give you hints and tips for cleaning without damage or a quote to get them repaired.

3rd October 10.30am: October is Black History Month and as part of this Terry Bracher will be doing a talk on Wiltshire’s black history at the History Centre. Tickets £3 – book early on 01249 705500 to avoid disappointment!
21st October 10am-4pm: Imagine Creative Writing are holding a Life Writing workshop here at the History Centre. Book your place by calling 01249 705500. Cost is £50 for the day.
